The History of Nakshi Kantha

The tradition of Kantha dates back over a thousand years. Women would recycle old saris and dhotis, layering them together and stitching them with colorful threads to create warm, beautiful quilts. The word Nakshi means ‘patterned’ — referring to the elaborate motifs that distinguish these pieces as true works of art.

Motifs and Meanings

Every Nakshi Kantha tells a story. Common motifs include the lotus flower (purity), fish (fertility and prosperity), trees of life, peacocks, and geometric patterns inspired by nature. No two pieces are ever identical — each is a unique expression of the artisan’s creativity and culture.
